Bombero Hot Sauce

Bombero Hot Sauce

Bombero Hot Sauce

For today’s Top 40 Herb we are going to make our very own Bombero, or “Firefighter,” Hot Sauce with Cayenne and some other herbs for support and flavor.

Bombero Hot Sauce

First add, ¼ cup Apple Cider Vinegar and ¼ cup of Distilled water to a sanitized mason jar.  Then add 1 Tablespoon of Cayenne powder, 2 Teaspoons of Garlic powder, 1 Teaspoon of Oregano powder, and ½ Teaspoon of any sea salt of choice.  Cover the jar with a bit of wax paper, screw the lid on over the wax paper tightly, and shake until evenly combined.  This spicy mixture can be enjoyed immediately, but it tends to thicken and the flavor matures over the next 24 hours as the herbs rehydrate.  We made this with our 90,000 HU Cayenne, but you can choose the Cayenne which matches your heat preference. If the sauce is too thin for your liking, ¼-½ Teaspoon of Marshmallow or Slippery Elm root powder could be added to thicken the mixture.  Other herbs like Horseradish, Rosemary, or Thyme could also be added according to your preference.  Others may even like a sweet note and may wish to add Honey, Fennel, or Anise.

Note: When working with Cayenne and other members of the pepper family there is a chance of eye, nose, and skin irritation.  You may want to wear gloves, and always thoroughly wash your hands before touching your face or eyes after working with any members of the pepper family.

This recipe is dedicated to my sister, Jericha, with whom I share a love of all things spicy.
