A Royal Gift

Myrrh gum resin has been considered a highly valuable substance for thousands of years. Its trade and use significantly predates its claim to fame as one of the three gifts from the Magi to Jesus in commemoration of his birth by at least 2000 years.  It weaved its way from its indigenous roots in Northern Africa all the way to India in South Asia, and was typically reserved for royalty and spiritual purposes.  Myrrh is still somewhat rare and valuable as the trees have never been domesticated for global commercial production. The governments of countries where these trees grow are also beginning to initiate protective regulations to preserve these trees and their royal gift for generations to come.

Myrrh gum can be burned as a resin incense, as well as made into topical and internal formulas. Not unlike burning sage, the smoke from burning myrrh resin is said to cleanse the air of impurities, physical and spiritual.  It can be burned in sacred spaces for spiritual cleansing, healing spaces, and anywhere there has been disease to purify the space.

Myrrh has been found to be useful for viral, fungal, and bacterial immune compromise inside and out. The resin can be infused into topical liniments, anointing oils, salves, and even mouthwash to promote immune response within open wounds on the skin and in the mouth.

Internal preparations of myrrh are often found as either liquid extracts or capsules, but it could also be consumed as tea.  While myrrh helps to support the entire immune system when taken internally, it is particularly beneficial for nourishing tissues and supporting immune response within the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive organs.  It is also the recommended alternative in many herb books for those who may have sensitivities to goldenseal root and similar herbs due to low blood sugar levels or other sensitivities.
