Tummy Soother Tea

We all get “the gurgs” from time to time.  Try Tummy Soother Tea to help calm and sooth an upset digestive system.

Ingredients

½ Cup Calendula Flowers, chopped

  • Discourages growth and promotes the elimination of microbial imbalances in the gut, supports healthy inflammatory response, and promotes the reparative processes of digestive organs from the inside out

½ Cup Catnip Herb, Cut (or Spearmint during pregnancy)

  • Stimulates the production of digestive secretions from the liver and pancreas, and calms inflammation within the digestive and nervous systems

¼ Cup + 4 tsp Marshmallow Root, Cut

  • Naturally occurring polysaccharide and other slippery components make up the mucilage from this plant which can help to coat and soothe irritated digestive tissues, balance stomach acidity, and support the natural reparative processes of the digestive system

2 Tbsp + 2 tsp Fennel Seeds, Whole

  • Stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, supports the elimination of toxins and mucus from the liver, and discourages gas, cramps, and bloating

Instructions

  1. Measure and mix all of the herbs in a mixing bowl or large measuring cup until they appear evenly combined.

  2. Transfer your mix to an airtight jar and label it to track freshness.

Note:  If your calendula flowers are in whole form, chop them up in a food processor to get a more accurate measurement.  They will also mix more easily and evenly with the other herbs if chopped.

2 Tablespoons of the blend equals a single serving for one person, and can be enjoyed 3-6 times a day to calm inflammation within the digestive system, stimulate digestive secretions and functions, and promote the reparative processes along the digestive tract.

Steeping Instructions

  1. Bring water to a simmer, and then turn off the heat.

  2. While your water is coming to a simmer, fill your tea infuser of choice with your dried herbs, and put it in a mug that sparks joy for you.

  3. Once your water has simmered, pour the hot water over the infuser in your mug, and cover!  This is especially important as this blend contains Catnip, a member of the mint family, and its essential oils are a part of its magic.

  4. Allow your tea to steep for no more than 10 minutes.  Flowers and leaves yield their nutrients very quickly in hot water.  Also, unlike most roots which need long steep times, marshmallow root is one of the few exceptions, and does better when steeped at a lower temperature and for a shorter period of time. You may also want to crack, but not fully crush your fennel seeds to help them to release their goodness a little faster.  Sweeten with raw honey or another sweetener of your choice and enjoy the soothing goodness.

Note: Catnip may not be suggested for use during pregnancy.  If there is a concern, Spearmint is the suggested mint of choice in its place.
