Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) is a perennial climbing vine native to eastern North America, ranging from southern Ontario to Florida and west to the Great Plains. Recognized by its heart-shaped leaves and long, tuberous roots, the plant grows naturally in damp soils along woodland edges and thickets. Although bitter and not typically used as a food, wild yam root has a long history of traditional use in herbal practices. It has been referenced in Traditional Chinese Medicine texts for centuries and was also utilized in Indigenous North American traditions before becoming part of early American herbalism. Our wild yam powder is made from wild-harvested roots and is commonly prepared as a decoction, liquid extract, or incorporated into herbal blends.
